Overview

Practical construction training covering bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing, and site management for job-ready skills. Training runs for 12 weeks at our Glasgow campus, in small groups, with most of each week spent on practical work rather than in a lecture room. Participants who complete the programme receive a John Wheatley College certificate of completion.

Typical practical activities

What a week in the workshop actually looks like.

  • Laying brick and block to line, level and gauge
  • Setting out from drawings on a workshop bay
  • Mixing mortar and working to UK tolerances
  • Site safety inductions and safe use of hand and power tools

Skills gained

What you should be able to do by the end of the programme.

  • Bricklaying, blockwork and basic carpentry
  • Reading construction drawings and specifications
  • Measuring, marking out and quality checking
  • UK site safety and CDM awareness
