Overview

Engineering courses focused on mechanical, electrical, and civil disciplines with strong technical and practical skills. Training runs for 12 weeks at our Glasgow campus, in small groups, with most of each week spent on practical work rather than in a lecture room. Participants who complete the programme receive a John Wheatley College certificate of completion.

Typical practical activities

What a week in the workshop actually looks like.

  • Bench fitting, filing and precision measurement
  • Basic welding and fabrication exercises
  • Reading engineering drawings and tolerances
  • Fault-finding on training rigs

Skills gained

What you should be able to do by the end of the programme.

  • Hand and machine fitting techniques
  • Use of micrometers, verniers and gauges
  • Interpreting engineering drawings
  • Workshop safety and risk assessment

Career pathways

The kinds of roles these skills relate to. The College does not offer or guarantee employment.

  • Roles in mechanical fitting and maintenance
  • Fabrication and welding support work
  • Further vocational study in engineering
